Kidambi Srikanth wins the 2017 Denmark Open Superseries Premier

What a year Kidambi Srikanth is having! India’s top male singles player has won his 3rd Badminton Superseries title of the year in Odense, Denmark, defeating the unseeded veteran Lee Hyun Il 21-10, 21-5 in a 24-minute final.

With the newly crowned World No. 1 and world champion, local boy Viktor Axelsen looming large on Srikanth’s half of the draw, not many would have fancied him for the title at the beginning of the week. One game into their quarterfinal match, it looked like Indian fans were about to have their worst fears come true. However, Srikanth was able to play his absolute best versus the Dane and keep up to take the second game 22-20 and eventually the decider 21-7.

The 24-year old sat out 3 months with a stress fracture on his right ankle following the Rio Olympics last year. A carefully phased return to competition and rigorous attention from his team of physiotherapists and trainers at the Gopichand academy has ensured that the ankle injury is a thing of the past and Srikanth is back into the top 10. The GoSports Foundation team was proud to be able to support him with these requirements and ensure he had access to the best expertise available, apart from his excellent coaches at the academy.

The newly crowned Denmark Open champion does not get a breather, as he will compete at the French Open beginning tomorrow. With the end of 2017 packed with more tournaments, the current World No. 8 has cemented his place as a firm medal favourite at the big events next year, such as the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, and the Asian Games as well.

GoSports Foundation has proudly supported Kidambi Srikanth since 2012; he has received funding for his international tournament expenses, to camera equipment, access to a personal physiotherapist and fitness trainer working with him to ensure his body supports the rigorous demands of high-performance sport.
