Powerlifter Sachin Chaudhary lifted a total of 201 kg and scored 181 points to win India its first medal in Para Sports at Gold Coast, 2018. Having failed in his first two attempts, Sachin managed to nail it in the final lift to clinch the bronze medal.

A Paralympian from London 2012, Sachin having missed the cut for the 2014 Commonwealth Games due to him serving a suspension, made his comeback last year and qualified for the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai earlier this year.

Speaking after his event, Sachin said “I am really happy to win my first medal at the Commonwealth Games. This was my fourth attempt at the Games and I have to say that it has been quite overwhelming to finally win a medal. Last few years have been the most difficult phase of my life, but I decided to focus on bouncing back stronger than ever. Today’s bronze almost feels like a gold to me, as a result.”

“It feels good to be the first Indian para medalist here in the Gold Coast. There are so many people I would like to thank : The Paralympic Committee of India and my fellow India para athletes for their constant encouragement and welcoming me back into sport. The GoSports Foundation, for backing my comeback and taking care of my sporting requirements during a stage when I was struggling to fund my comeback. This medal is for the Para sporting fraternity in the country." Sachin added.
